    Water Quality Meters

Looking to purchase both an ORP and TDS meter. Any suggestions from board members regarding which ones I should consider, based on your experiences as far as quality and dependability. Thanks!

    tds meter

http://cgi.aol.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI...tem=2373140299 There is a link to where I got my handheld unit from nice easy e-bay purchase. orp I am not sure but you may browse through ebay and find that there as well. Also a good source for reverse osmosis units. great way of adding a couple of hundred gallons per day to keep all levels low tds and additives... just a thought

    orp

while we are on the topic all be it a broad one what are some ranges we should try to maintain? Relative to PH? Hardness? and oh heck lets hash over tds levels as well and salt will fall into this category. Seeing as I just got in from spreadding about forty tons of rock salt; ( on transit lots not in my pond ) it it fresh on the mind skin boots etc.

Just last week I bought HANNA Instruments DIST 1 for measuring TDS. It is digital ( 0 to 1999 ppm), pocket size and very practical. Accuracy is to 1 ppm. Price: US$ 51,-

I've one of those too Kiky - very easy to use.

In fact all my meters are Hanna, i.e. TDS, Ammonia and Nitrite.

    Hi Bern,

You mean HANNA also has digital meter to measure ammonia and nitrite. I didn't know that. I think I have to buy that as well. I am all for the practical digital meter. I simply don't like measuring using chemicals and the likes.

    Hi Kiki.

The Ammonia and Nitrite are electronic with digital display.
You still have to mix chemicals but instead of making a haphazard comparison against a chart this does it for you.

You basically put a test tube of pond water into the meter and zero in the meter. Takes a few seconds. Then mix a chemical with another test tube of pond water and place it the meter for a reading. The meter times the reading and gives a digital output.

One takes 10minutes the other less. I set up the ammonia (10mins) first and then the Nitrite (6mins) with a bit of experience you can get them both to read out at roughly the same time.

Once its done you wash out the test tubes and put it away. Probably 15 minutes all told and a far higher degree of accuracy than any colour comparison chart.
