aquitori,
I don't have a current pic. However, I know the koi's quality doesnt change. She just grew a little bit bigger. I don't think she changes much on the pic.

Every Fish kept in captivity is stunted. Some more so than others. There wouldn't be an Aquarium or Marine Aquarium, or even a Koi hobby were it not true.

Ever fish in Capitive is stunted... So if I were to buy a 36" Kohaku is that considered stunted? or How about 56" Chagoi?

Red face

Bonsai koi to me are culls that have made it thru the selection process all the way to South Florida at no reduced price. Some of the koi I attempt to grow I figure have been culled 5 times at least before I get a pick so Bonsai Koi do happen very often in my pond and it ticks me off to no end. I remember the source of each and every one like it was branded in my arm. In all my dealings and purchases, I can count the people on one hand that have warned me about potential runts (bonsai koi) that I have selected. The thumb, index and pinky finger don't count.

I have read about a breeder named Suzujyu koi farm. They breed excellent high quality showa..but not large fish. He enters shows and wins in the smaller classes regularly. What is interesting is he turns all his mud ponds into liner ponds. His koi finish very well at smaller sizes. He stated in the article I read, that not everyone has a huge pond...or wants huge fish. The smaller finished koi seems to be his niche. Just for the record...his Doitsu sanke are amazing as well...I want one sooo bad!!! I would choose excellent quality over size any day.

Sup bro, it's been a while! Anyway yeah, I purchased some decent kohaku's that turned out to be bosai. The sizes were 11 and 12 inches at 15 months. I thought I was getting somewhat of a deal for what I paid. Thought they were left overs from the spring. I didn't know what bonsai koi was until recently, and my understanding then was growing them in a small enviorment to stunt the growth. Not thinking for the fall harvested koi there would be runts in the pack. My goal is to grow fish and see how they turn out. But I guess we'll see what happens with these? In response to your question, should the dealer notify you that they are bonsai, or could be. Yes! Dealers should be informative to a certain exstent. Especially if your in hopes of a tategoi growing out a pattern, or attaining more conformation. If I knew, I'd of asked!

Help me out on this, I have had 6" koi or smaller that grew to 10" to 12" in a year. Now the koi I bought at 15 months 12" were considered bonsai. How big does a koi grow in a sizeable pond here to in 15 months average? And how big does a koi grow in Japan, mudpond and all in 15 months average? I'm just trying to figure out if these fish are just a little behind in size, or are they older than 15 months?
