It looks like all of these are 13-months old. Was this a late August spawn?

Hmmm.... When it comes to producing GCs, the 'big 3' are Dainichi, SFF and Momotaro and now they all have an auction to start the new sales season. And, the auctions are scheduled so dealers can go to all. That's good business and I find it interesting that Dainichi timed its entry into the Fall auctions to come first.

The difference between growing in Niigata and in the south is clear. It takes a more trained eye, I think, to understand how a 43cm nisai grown in the mountains compares to a 56cm nisai grown in the south. The length and bulk obtained by Momotaro and SFF give an impression of a mature fish in nisai. At age 7 we know the impressions change.

Wouldn't it be a glorious week to start in the mountains this weekend, then travel south for SFF's auction and end the week by attending the Momotaro auction? But, of course, these are for dealers.

These koi were harvested early for the auction by about 2 1/2 months. Normally nisai from the farm are not harvested until early November thus giving them optimum growth during that last crucial couple of months. The nisai that the boys & I saw last year were all over 50 cm with many in the mid 50's.

Here is a vid with the boys and Bram discussing last year's nisai.

Very nice-I think I saw these posted last fall. The bodies, whites, and reds are exceptional. Would love to own one. Are you going this year?

Good video Ryan. Pretty cool experience to grade 4 koi from Dainichi in person. I still like that Showa for some reason. ;-)

Would've love to be able to pick one of the Kohaku

Can't wait to see pics of these later this year.

    Hi Mike

Here are some higher end nisai from last year. This was right after coming in from the mud pond in first week of Nov. easily 60-65cm for nisai.

    enjoy

Duc: Yes, those are very nice Kohaku. I would have thought they were sansai.
