    All I can say is that this is a small step better than an Aquascape design due to the piping allowing water movement through the gravel... until it clogs. It is still a bad concept for a koi pond.

    I gave up on undergravel filters in aquaria so many decades ago. They work well at first. As the gravel bed becomes loaded with mulm, performance declines. Only gravel washing on a regular basis can make them useful, and that takes more work than other filtration types that are more efficient.
