"You Be The Judge" Exercise now online

The American Koi Judges Association is happy to announce our first on-line edition of "You Be The Judge". After several months of 'tweaking' various formats, we have finally arrived at something we think will work. We have selected five show-quality Japanese bred Kohaku to judge. Our judging team has already completed their discussions and rankings of these five koi for Conformation, Quality, and Pattern, but only one section at a time will be posted, allowing readers to judge each element independently, prior to seeing the judges' rankings. The introductory remarks and Conformation general discussion are already posted. Tomorrow the judges' discussion and rankings for Conformation will be posted.

This will be followed in one or two-day intervals by discussions and rankings on Quality and Pattern, and finally an over-all ranking of the koi.

This will hopefully be a challenging and educational exercise for hobbyists at all levels. We will post the pictures of the five koi below, but in order to participate in the rest of the exercise, readers will want to log in to AKJAonline.org, and go thru a quick and easy registration process. It is intended to be an interactive exercise, so readers can ask questions or comment on each koi.

We hope you enjoy this "You Be The Judge" exercise as much as we did doing it!

    Bryan Bateman

It depends on whether you interpret body bends as the result of capturing the moment, or showing the reality of the fish.

The judges' discussion and rankings for Conformation will be posted this evening. BTW, you don't have to register at AKJAonline in order to view the pictures or read the discussions and rankings. Registration does allow you to make comments and get more involved in the interactive aspect of the exercise tho.

Next up: Quality (colors, skin, and kiwa/sashi).

    Have fun!

    Bryan

What size should we imagine these Kohaks are in to pick best conformation?

Been member of AKJS for a while...been waiting for the first 'You be the judge' segment...

Question: Is there a reason why the shadow on the right side of each pic nearly identical? Just curious if this is intentional or just simply coincidence...

Damn it must be rigged...either that or the photos were all taken at the same time by the same photographer in the same tank with the same lighting (which is apparently off center to the left a tad thus causing a shadow on the right).
