I think you'd have an issue Paul. Even young nisai can easily reproduce...

I've had Koi in japan grow ponds, 2 years old that hardly grew by fall. Asked what happened and they say they misjudged a few males and had a spawn or two and the programmed amount of food was overwhelmed by the young fry.

One of the biggest potential problems in a mud pond is a spawn. Not only will growth be minimal from the survivors but the resulting poor water quality can lead to much worse issues including dead koi. I would avoid placing known males and females in a mud pond.

When there is a spawn they drain the pond if they have the ability to refill it when the fry are large enough to be seined so they can remove them. However by this time the damage is done and about half the growing season is over.

tosai would not (or should not) be a problem to mix sex into a mud pond. But for reasons already mentioned, nisai and older can be a major issue.
