    Hey Joe,

You know I have a thing for Kohaku and Sanke. Nice
Sanke is quite hard to find compared to showa.

Somehow, I personally think Kohaku and Sanke are simple and elegant.

However, Showa definitely has more presence.

    Just my 2c.

What do you think about this sanke ? IT's a torazo.

Definitely showa. I always thought it was more difficult to pick a good small showa than any other type of koi. The fact that sumi is often difficult to predict, makes this a tough variety to get right. If I had a bucket of 20 kohakus, 20 sankes and 20 showas...I would have less trouble picking the future good kohakus and sankes than showas. The sumi is always a gamble....this makes me appreciate a good showa more than the others. Here's a picture of my 18" showa...just for the heck of it.

Kohaku, showa, sanke, in that order.

With kohaku, I like the simplicity of only two colors but the complexity in how those two colors interact with each other. Showa are more striking and seem powerful vs a kohaku that seems graceful.

I don't think I've learned to fully appreciate sanke yet.

Just something about a really nice sanke that starts my engine. Like all three, but as mentioned earlier, good sankes are not as easy to find as good kohaku's and showa's. Just my opinion though.

They say that you start with kohaku and end with kohaku. I have recently switched allegiance from kohaku to sanke. I would be afraid to ever go back to kohaku because that might indicate that the end is near.

Showa have never been a favorite because they do not show up well in my murky ponds over black liner. The new showa are flashier with brighter colors. However, I refuse to accept a white-based fish (from yellow fry) as a real showa and have contended elsewhere that showa are the victim of identity theft. If any factor was to draw me away from sanke to showa, it would be an interest in preserving a lost art - selecting showa from black fry.
