    KB's Announcement: Support KHV Research

    Hi KB members,

Just see the annoucement from KB Administrator on the top of the K-B General Forum page. The recent KHV (Koi Herpes Virus) breaks down in Japan as well as in USA and other countries in the past is a reminder for all us including koi hobbyist, koi dealers, and koi breeders how deadly this virus is. We need to support the KHV Research project as mentioned in K-B announcement.

The main purpose of the KHV Research projects that funded by AKCA is to develope new technologies directly control eradication, studying for a cure or an effective KHV vaccine.

I believe AKCA is a U.S Tax exempt for non-profit corporation and any donations made to AKCA. So your contributions will be tax deductible.

Thanks K-B administration for involving in annoucement of "Help Support KHV Research Project". We will do our part to make donation soon and hoping all of K-B Koi hobbyist will do the same, specially Koi Dealers and Koi Breaders will do their best as well.

    Best Regards,
    --Dinh

Please also note that Ray Jordan, a K-B memeber, is a member of AKCA KHV Committee. Hope Ray can input some more about AKCA KHV research project and funding in details.

    Thanks,

AKCA - Project KHV welcomes and needs your support

    Hi,
I wanted to post a special thank you to Brian, Dinh, and all on this board that are helping to raise funds for KHV research. I have received a many emails and questions about AKCA Project KHV and I wanted to respond here for all to view.

Project KHV was created in late 2004 with two major goals. First, to offer a respected non-profit organization dedicated to Koi to raise significant funds to donate to KHV research. To date we have received over $110,000. We organized a dedicated team of koi hobbyists to staff all Project KHV committees except for the scientific committee who are volunteer medical or veterinary professionals with a specific interests in koi diseases.

Second, the scientific committee was assigned the task to seek, investigate, and recommend the very best opportunities where we could offer incremental funding of KHV research projects that appear to have the best chances of success. We will only make targeted contributions directly to KHV research projects that pledge that none of our contributions will be spent on administrative costs or other programs. Contributions are given in small incremental amounts based on each funded project achieving their written research goals in a timely fashion. We feel that how we spend the funds raised is extremely important to achieving our goal.

We are currently funding a research project being conducted at North Carolina State University, College of Veterinary Medicine. The principal investigator on the project is Jay Levine, DVM, MPH and co-investigator is Raghunath Shivappa, PhD. The project seeks to identify two (2) different koi herpesvirus (KHV) vaccines (using different delivery modalities). If the research is successful, it is hoped that a licensee will ultimately be identified to bring the new vaccines to market. This research project is already approximately half completed and final results are anticipated by mid-2006. This is only the first phase of a development sequence necessary to ultimately prepare a vaccine for wide-spread distribution, a goal which is likely still years away.

The NCSU-CVM is world renowned in fish medicine and boasts faculty that includes many authors of well known books on fish medicine, e.g., Edward Noga, MS, DVM (Fish Disease, Diagnosis and Treatment); Michael Stoskopf, DVM, PhD (Fish Medicine); Greg Lewbart, MS, VMD (Self-Assessment Colour Review of Ornamental Fish), and many others well known in the world of fish health and medicine, e.g., Craig Harms, DVM, PhD and Michael Swanson, DVM. We hope to be able to share research updates as the work progresses.

Of course, additional KHV research projects are being investigated and will we do our very best to seek out the best to support with funding. Some potential projects involve oral vaccine technology(Japan), better KHV tests, KHV survivor studies, etc. We are very encouraged by our early progress and support from the koi community. It is hoped that individual koi hobbyists, associations, breeders, and dealers will make a generous donation for KHV research.
Thank you in advance for your assistance with this effort.

    Fundraiser Auction

Just to let everyone know, there will be a fundraising auction at thekoiauction.com.

The item is a koi slate that was donated by Peter to Benefit Project KHV. The kohaku in the slate was the All Japan Show 2001 Grand Champion owned by Mr. Yang of Taiwan and bred by Sakai FF.

The auction will commence on November 5th at 8am CDT, and will end on November 19th at 9pm CDT. Starting bid is $100 US.

I have placed the auction of behalf of Ray Jordan, under the name "charity" in case any of you are wondering why the location is listed as Japan. Any and all charity/benefit auctions going forward will be placed under this name.

It's for the noblest of causes for our hobby folks, so don't hold back in your bidding!

I was just wondering, the ZNA being the world's largest koi club, why haven't we heard anything in regards to any fund raising on their side?
