Luke: Absolutely correct. The clay needed for pottery has to fall within a comparatively narrow range. On the other hand, the clay used to lubricate/cool drilling bits for oil & gas wells or to make kitty litter does not have to be so exact. (I've seen it estimated that there over 90 million cats using litterboxes in the USA. Imagine how much clay gets mined just for them! LOL... our koi are a very minor market.)

Tony, if Super Clean has clay in it, why the additional clay? I understand and appreciate the cleansing of the liver, although I was unaware that clay would assist in that process.

thank you Mike! lots of good info here.
more than anything I like the idea of the trace elements the koi can get from the clay that my pond would be lacking

I have recently purchased a nice showa with excelent sumi . I also have a few nice kohakus and sankes with very nice he. I live in a soft water area ( g.H 3-4dH) and have considered using clays to improve water condition. I change almost 10% daily to maintain a tds of 75ppm
After reading this thread I would be convinced that clays can only be a good thing. However are there any disadvantages when you already have sufficient general hardness (G.H.) I understand that al clays are not the same in this respect. Refresh being one of the lowest in this respect. I also understand that some G.H. is needed for minerals but too much can have an effect on benni and too little will have an effect on summi. What are your thoughts on this
