My Dad has 2 domestics that are over 30 inches. They are at least 10 years old.

I have not seen any domestic gosanke over 30" that I would call high quality. I have seen a lot of non gosanke's that are over 30" that I would love to have in my pond. I also have seen a few domestic gosanke over 30", but the quality was not the best.

My question is does someone have to have a high quality koi to enjoy this hobby? Very few poeple in the US have high quality koi. I would say it's less than 10% have high quality koi. The main thing is that they have healthy koi they can enjoy. The hobby is about enjoying what you have.

Keep it simple, keep it straight Koi-Bito.com

Don't know of any. I think SMG's "USA" showa will make it given its size at current age and the fact that it is in "good" hands for growing. I think collectively the american breeders are not doing a good job marketing, people want to see the best jumbo koi they have produced, they are not bothering post them, not producing them, or sending the better fish into "bad" hands.

I go to Maui often and when my wife and I walk I always drop by the hotels to check out the huge grass carps and some of the nicer Japanese koi. They are not the best but I can appreciate them as they fill a void for me while I am on vacation..

So yes Tom we can enjoy them without being top quality..

But we still prefer the to look at the best ones..

Thanks Joe, I'm glad we all can appreciate all grades of koi. I will say most of the domestic in the US are not in the same class of those from Japan, but they don't also cost as much in most cases.
