    Chinese Zodiac Story

There are many folktales around the Chinese Zodiac. One of the most popular is that Buddha invited all the animals to visit him. The cat heard the news, he told his friend the rat and they were supposed to go together the next day. The next morning, the rat didn't wake the cat and the cat slept through it. The cat never made it and never got assigned a year. That's why cats hate rats.

All the animals had to cross a river so the rat asked an ox to let him ride on its head. The ox agreed and just as they were about to arrive, the rat jumped off the ox's head and got in first. That's why the year of the rat is the first year in the cycle and the year of the ox is the second.

In another story, the cat and the rat both jumped on the ox's back and the rat pushed the cat into the river. That's why cats hate water.

My wife's a rat and she's rather proud of the story.
