Well, looks metallic. So, I'd label it a Doitsu Hariwake. But, the caudal fin does not look very shiny, so may be the shine on the pectorals is just a camera illusion?... When all else fails, there is always Kawari.

LOL thanks Mike at least you tried....I think that classifying Koi can be confusing especially on these types of fish.

I think it falls into the Idonomo class.

I would say its a hariwake... But, then I thought "beni-" something....

Does it have a white belly... if the belly is all white, it is most likely a kohaku... We are talking "Hi" (pron: hee).... Which means red....

JR, I've been trying to find out for al long time what exacttly a Zakura ogon is. Some say it's a Hikari version of kohaku (but others call this a Kin Fuji). Others say a Zakura Ogon is a Hikari Kanoko Kohaku?

Maryland: JR is not making that up. It is a name used decades ago. I'd completely forgotten.

LOLs, no , JR is not making it up!

The benizakura ogn is a hariwake type but very different in that it is finished with what the old breeders call oramental boards. It is the luster you see on scales that isn't quite ginrin. You can see that in this doitsu specimen, the scales are lighter and stand out over the normal plate color.
Here's a tip for the newbie lurker-- many defining points of scaled varieties are seen in the scale tips. matsuba, kujaku, ect all are 'who they are' because of details of the scale tips. But when these forms come in doitsu the beginner often misses the 'tip off' ( pun intended!). So the difference between a hariwake doitsu and a kujaku can come down to having balck tips on that single row of scales.
In the case of our fish, the scales define the fish. There is NO QUESTION that this fish is from kohaku. It has the 'atmosphere' of kohaku. It is seen in the hi plate shape and the wrap around the platinum base. But the nature of beni and the scales tell us we can't quite call it a platinum kohaku or as mike said a kin fuji ( as that would tend to be a 'bald fish').
