Keep in mind. Turtles are notorius for carrying salmonella.
If the kid is healthy it's probably no big deal but "explain" that they are " dirty" and get the hand washing routine happening.

In this day and time sooo many kids have immuno issues it can be problematic.
No turtles for my granddaughter... not yet.

As y'all know I use salt on french fries.
I use turtle in my soup !

wow, don't know turtle can be so nasty....my 6 years old daughter always want to have a turtle in our pond.... seems like I need to tell her about this since she got few small koi ....
The way I understand it, aquatic turtles, like the one I have, will only go after the sick ones..... I had bought some "feeder fish" from the pet store.... and of the 15 that I bought 10 of them were eaten by him... That is because they were not strong enough to make it... So, he was able to get to them.... My black moor, had a missing eyeball and could not see... so he kept bumping into anything in his way... So, the turtle was able to get him.....

The last batch of "feeder fish" I bought, of 15 that I bought, they are all still in the pond, and he did not touch them....

He has never bothered my koi because my koi were all healthy and he could not catch them.....

Its just easy for a turtel to catch a weak fish. But let me stress that they do and will eat your healthy koi and goldfish. Dont let a water quality problem have your koi sitting around for a while. Might just be dinner for the turtle. No way would I put a turtle in my pond at any size.

I had my turtle in my pond for nearly a year.... I dug him out maybe a month ago....

He was ready to hibernate in there.... My koi were fine...

He did spook my indoor koi..... He also "nipped" the tail of my smaller black moor...

    But, these guys are alright....

And, then again, that depends on the kind of turtle that one gets....

What kind of turtle do you have? Many turtles are dangerous to fish. Snappers are the worst, especially alligator snapping turtles, then soft-shelled turtles. Musk and mud turtles can be aggresive, not to mention smelly, but they are smaller. Sliders can be aggresive to fish, especially small fish. I am not sure about map turtles, but as they are largely aquatic they may be bad. Painteds, while still not great, are probably the best choice, wouldn't you agree. (yes, you could say the best is not at all but les discount that for now.) What do you think is the best turtle? (And not "the best turtle is no turtle" either).

Wink As long as we are wildly off-topic

What do you think is the best kind of alligator to keep in the pond? The little ones are so cute....

Maybe Kohaku should add an African clawed frog to the aquarium with his koi.
