Johnson came out with a new goldfish book a year or so ago. It's a must-read for the goldfish-inclined and includes breeding sections by Richard Hess, Jackie Chan (Tung Hoi) and Izhak Kroshinsky. Johnson did a good job of synthesizing all the goldfish health stuff. He also revealed his new cure for goldfish swim bladder disease - surgically implanting quartz rocks in the fish's abdominal cavity so it can't flip over and float upside-down at the surface. Everyone else in the world thought you avoid swim bladder problems by providing proper diet and using good genetic stock.

well, i have to admit it is a unique way to solve the problem, he definitely thinks outside the box. I would have tried implanting a small inner tube near the top of the fish with the valve coming out its anus. then you could simply inflate until you had the correct amount of air to keep the fish upright.
