Nope, mine are not true black percs. But jet black. Managed to produce and bring to sell size 13 in the first hatch and 18 in the second. I'm now trying a pair of very attractive maroons. They have bonded ( the easily part) and are 'dancing' and cleaning rock surface all the time now. I'm hopeful, we'll see----

You must be using better food sources that I am as I can't get that kind of count from a single spawn. Care to share the feeding technique? JR

Occelarris make great schooling fish since they are small. But the True perks color is what used to set me off. the Pronounced black is what got me. To not high jack this thread.. Think of how hard it would be to cull out if it was like koi and a standard in pattern for true perc

We start them off with a high density of rotifers and switch them over to newly hatched brine at about three days. I would recommend "Clownfishes" by Joyce Wilkerson. We have only managed to raise a few of the Gold-striped Maroons. They are very agressive and kill each other off if kept together. Feed the brood stock some shaved table shrimp to help produce healthy babies. Some pair produce better fry after they get a few spawns under their belt. The nose on the Bk ocellaris (Darwin clowns) turns black as they mature. Pictured is my pair guarding yellow/orange eggs in the background. The other picture is one I have have paired with a nice male and hope will one day spawn. It comes froma geographically isolated area. Something like Biac Island. Raise offspring like these and you have a money maker for sure.

My marons were yellow striped when younger but the yellow has lighten up considerable now- I assume the color was age( juvenile) or diet related?

in an attempt to get this thread 'somewhat ' back on line, I mentioned to John that one of a kind odd ball hybrid varieties are really a rip off of the customer the vast majority of the time. I meant that. I also would like to say that there are spectacular results from random crosses as well. They are however not duplicated easily as they are random and based on hybrid crosses so they carry all the possibilities of the two varieties ( as all mutts do). And once one of the parent stock is lost, so is the combination effect.

yes they are. the one in the center is pretty famous.

I must agree with you on the muts part. In the beginning, the "product" of crosses are muts. But when stabalized, they will become a variety in the end, if it is bred by enough breeders. I can remember years ago I saw some metallic koi on the Pan intercorp site, like I had never seen before. Back then, they were called "one of a kind", and rightly so at that time. Nowadays, the Kikokuryo is a recognized variety. Many moons ago, it must have been the same when Kohaku were crossed with Utsuri.
