JNorth, great thread. This will be a great learning lesson for many of us that are interested in Shiro Utsuri, and Omosako koi in particular.

Using what most say about developing sumi it seems like many of the koi have a lot of fairly developed sumi. Either that, or this is baby sumi that has yet to disappear? So as far as my pick for future development, I will go with Koi #5 as well. It has a balanced look, has nice body, and looks like it has a lot of maturing to do yet.

It is interesting that when looking at the close up individual shots, some of the koi have a different look compared to the group shot. I like #4 for example, but from the individual shot, I see a little hi on the koi's right pec which makes it less appealing.

If you already covered this, I may have missed it. What are the parameters for the pond that you will be growing these 5 koi? Will they be by themselves or mixed with other koi? Thanks.

- Wayne, looking forward to seeing the results.

From Dick Benbow on the other Shiro thread:

Since most modern day shiro utsuri breedings are from showa background, red in small amounts can be an indication of better black. usually within the first 2 years of growth that red will go orange, then yellow, then gone.

Hi Wayne . I was wondering when you would show up. Yours and others enthusiasm with my before and after pics of my other shiro helped to compel me to do this project. As far as the experiment goes they will be in the same pond together for the entirety of the project. Right now they are all together in my in indoor qtank. When spring arrives they will go into my 5k pond. There are other koi in with them although I will probably shuffle some of the other koi around and I may sell off a few as well. So I can't really say what the stocking rates will be at this time. I'll get more into that in the spring. This particular thread was just a pick the shiro thread. I'll start a new thread in a few weeks with closeups of pecs. Right now they are still getting over jetlag so I don't want to bowl them and photograph at length just yet. Picking a shiro with red on the pec was intentional as was picking one with no motoguro on one pec. Just for informational purposes there is a 6th koi involved in the experiment but it is a tancho showa bred by Omosako. Pics of it are at my site.

And the tancho looks to have a completely different state of sumi, like all the baby sumi is gone. And developed motoguro.

I like the showa and I'll pick long shot #3 of the shiros. Lotta black and I like that too. All my Omosako tosai lightened up a lot in the second summer. I should have never sold any of them, but they are all gone. The pointy yellow head doesn't even bother me. Feed em, Jim.

Thanks Don. I did read the sage advice from Dick Benbow, and that is a good reminder. Thanks. But for a new koi person, picking out a young fish, the words "can" and "usually" are a little scary.

Would tobi hi on a shiro utsuri, be it on the pecs or on the body, be regarded the same as for a showa? In other words, when looking at a showa, hi on the pecs or a few stray hi spots would be less appealing as well. Since the above advice stems from the showa blood in many modern shiro utsuris, does that mean a little hi on a young showa is also fine?

- Wayne, has a showa that had just a bit of hi on a pec, and without bowling it, it appears to have faded to a large degree.

Hey Jim. Glad to know my interest in your other great shiro has stimulated your own interest in studying this aspect of Omosako's shiro utsuris. The growth and development of your tancho as part of this exercise will be very interesting as well. A couple of guys on a different forum just bought 5 Kaneko tosai shiro utsuris with a range in sumi. It would be very interesting if the development of those fish could be contrasted with the development of your own.

- Wayne, will go window shop for some shiro utsuri.

Ok here is a pic my good friend. I'll start another thread about motoguro when I have a chance to photograph them one at a time.

These guys have been in qt since they arrived so since the weather is finally warming up they may actually be moving outside soon. So I figured I should go ahead and do another scrape now just to make sure they are still ok(and they are). So I went ahead photographed number 5 again so you could see the changes that have occured in a little less then 2 months.
