Richard,
You probably don't go to Koishack.com
So I'll post my opening volley in a thread I started entitled "Skanke" where I state my love of bekkos over S(k)ankes
( Skanke - KoiShack )

"I know what a good one looks like; I've got some decent ones in the lake, but I tell ya what.
I don't like em..I can see a great one and tell ya it is a great one...but it don't do a thing for me.
A great Bekko is nicer looking than a great Skanke...A Skanke's just a Kohaku with Steroid Shimis... Too much is happening
I think they showed up one day and they were different enough so someone named them after the King so they caught on....
Bekkos are Better."

Thanks Luke,

Bekkos will be a challenge and apparently I have a long way to go. Russ informs me that Mr. Sakai himself looked at the photos and pronounced "no good fish". So either there are no good fish here or it's unique to him too. Regardless, I personaly will bet against the master's own good judgement.

Sorry Cindy. I was so twitterpated with the masses of beauty out there I completely forgot to abduct them.

Rest assured though, if Richard will have me back, I'll be there when they emerge from their comfy mud (nice ponds, did I mention that?) in the Spring. I'll hide you some in my drool cup....yes, it's that big. *LOL*

I think the comment 'no good fish' needs to be understood in the context made, which we do not have; and in the context of what Sakai-san means by a 'good fish'. There is a vast range of meaning between 'these are all trash' and 'none of these is a "good fish"'. Everything in koi is relative. It should be remembered that Bekkos are not purpose-bred. They are all culls. (Except the 'Arkansas Bekko', of course. )

The mountain is very high. No matter how far one goes, the peak is not attained until it is reached. ...But the view gets better as the journey progresses.
