Grow Out Event Showa

Hi all,

we are hosting the first ever grow out event in Indonesia. The koi just arrived this evening. The showa are from Marusyo and Oomo. Mr. Fujio Oomo will come to Jakarta on 9th June for a seminar about selecting showa.

I would be glad to get some comments about the koi .

Several of the 40 koi are very nice. Overall, I think the quality is good for a grow out event.

Most gosanke grow out contests I've seen have had disappointing results when the fish are viewed as a whole by the end of the event. The trend here in the USA seems to be going towards choosing chagoi, etc. for grow out fish -- and judging strictly on growth (vs. quality, pattern, & etc.).

Hi Don,

in our case the koi will be judged after 6 month by breeder Marusyo but according to their quality. I am curious how the koi will develop. We installed an oxygen concentrator to provide the best environment for the koi (because of the water temps of around 27 deg.). Anything else is up to their genes

Some of those fish are very nice. The problem I see is that showas typically take a lot longer than 6 months to show their "true colors". I don't really think a showa is a good choice for a growout unless the term is 2 years or so.

Congrats and all the best for the very first Grow Out Event that will be held shortly !
I am in deep nervous now, waiting for my parents to give me 'green' light for me to join the event

Haha...about the fishes, most of them are Hi-Showa though (correct me if i'm wrong)...and there are some koi in mind already...well, i do not mind spending my 3 months extra allowance from my parents for next semester for these...hehe...

Will all the koi be grown together in the dealer's pond? Or will they be taken 'home' by their new owners for six months, then brought back to be judged?

Hi Don,

the event is held by KOI's (Koi Owners of Indonesia Society) and we are providing one pond for that event. The fishes will stay there for six month so that they have equal conditions.

Maybe it's just me....but a growout contest isnt much of a contest if the fish's owner has nothing to do with actually growing the fish. The growout I just participated in ran for a 12 month period. The fish were grown by the owners and brought together at the Southern Koi Expo for judging. There were three prizes......grand champion (best overall fish of the day), best tategoi (fish with most future potential) and most growth. I have seen other growouts where the fish were judged on most-growth only. In all cases that I have seen though, a growout contest is really about which fish owner does the best job raising their own fish.
