One of the more memorable sights for me was something on the other side of the depot. A Sabal Palm encased by a Strangler Fig. The smooth fig bark looked like cement with leaves coming out the top, but it was 100% natural in the vicious way Nature has. If you stuck your hand into the crevice in the last pic, you could feel the rough palm trunk.

DCNY: Luyen's koi were well grown. I think he is learning about the climate differences for keeping koi in Florida. ...a lot of folks are. Ten years ago the best Florida's koikeepers had to offer for judging were not all that impressive. The notion of someone maintaining good quality in a 70cm+ koi was just fanciful daydreaming. It is happening now.

Having koi shows is at the root of the advancement in the hobby in Florida. It has allowed people to see quality levels they would not otherwise see. That motivates doing better; and once folks adopt better keeping methods, the added beauty of higher quality begins to justify the extra cost. The judges at the Naples show traveled long distances at no small cost. Their judging duties were the focus, but they were also doing a crucial task in building the hobby.

Thanks for taking and putting up all those pix of fish and folks, Mike. It was really enjoyable to view them, and I do think you're correct -- good quality on large fish in Florida is happening.
