I look at that link and see someone trying to cure "in hope" it will return to condition or get better isnt doing justice to the fish. As this hobby is about the beauty of Nishikigoi, keeping Hikkui raveaged fish is beyond what this hobby is about.

I have seen and heard of hobbyist buying doctered GoSanke from dealers and breeders with Hikkui only for it to reappear several months later after having the fish in the pond. So BUYER beware!!!
Tony,
Thanks for the advice. Another question, is hikkui disease contagious or is it more of a genetic make up of the fish?

hikui

Sorry I can't give you any information about Sanke other than is was about 10 years old. The showa about 12.
In my opinion it is not worth repairing hikui. As you can see in the pictures of Griffiths doing surgery, there is still hikui around the areas he has repaired. This areas well only deteriorate and require more surgery. You can't win.
Once I saw how fast this problem grew on my koi,I pretty much gave up.
I sent those pictures to Duncan (about 2 years ago)and he now uses them for examples.
Duncan and I had some nice emails about the problem and that helped me make my decision.

KoiCop,
Thanks very much for the link. The related info was very helpful and I don't doubt that I will need it in the future.
Happy New Year.

I have had a koi with hikui, with no indication of contagion. A friend who is one of the most diligent koikeepers to be found has had it appear, with no contagion although the fish was kept for a couple or three years after the hikui appeared. Another locally has had it affect almost every Kohaku and Sanke placed in his ponds... which are well-maintained and house some very nice koi. I am increasingly coming to believe that there are more than one disease involved with similar symptoms, and that there just may be a viral link that results in a contagion in certain environments... Or, a mineral/metal component in the water that makes certain ponds more susceptible than others. It is very depressing to see a fine fish decline with hikui, and to see a whole pond decline makes kawarigoi look particularly attractive.

Hi Mike: I think at this point my pea brain cannot understand the complexities of hikui based on the examples you have given. To many variables for me. You smart ones well have to start working that hypothesis out. I do like wear you are going with this.
After releasing my fish back into a green 2 acre pond, I'm wondering if I can go get them and find them cured. Anybody have a 2 acre net?
