hikui

Hi All: I have recently signed up on your board. I posted my first thread(in regards to sumi) witch had a pictures of my utsuri. I have been going through the old threads and noticed there wasn't any good pictures of hikui. I hope to fix that.
The first two pictures were of my sanke(early stages). The second two were of my showa .
I know that their isn't alote of information in regards to hikui. However my personal experience tells me that if you have it,get rid of the fish. My reasoning is the showa came down with it for the first time in my pond. The sanke came down with it about six months later. I moved them into a friends 2 acre pond and wished them well. Perhaps it was a coinsidence, but I was not going to take the chance with my other fish.

Some say Hikkui comes from genetics...curious to know what breeder your Sanke is from?

You can probably buy the products from a dealer that carries alot of UK products.

Just a quick note to the article link. Hikkui can not be cured!!! What Duncan was showing in those pics is that you can get rid of the visible defects Hikkui causes. Also, if you notice the beni condition of kohaku it is just going to get worst.

Tony,
If Hikui could not be cured, then what other methods besides the provided link that one can use "in hope" to slow down the growth of the disease?
Thanks,
vinh

never say never...BUT

But there are lots of incidences where Hikkui was cured but when put back
in the same circumstances as before, it again started up .

I have read volumns on it, causes etc but it seems certain individuals are disposed to being deteriorated by it. Others in the same pond are fine.

In some of the older Rinko's, fish were cured in green ponds and when brought back to the owner's pond it kicked up again.I also think recovery depends upon how quickly the episode was dealt with. So who wants to own a koi you never see? Hence the understanding it can't be cured. Maybe we should add to the satisfaction of the owner's present facilities.

As long as I have been in the hobby I find nothing really helps from what I have experienced...There might be some ways of controlling it, but I feel that if you have fish in that condition, it usually isnt worth all the time and money to try and fix a condition that will obviously come back within weeks or months. I look at that link and see someone trying to cure "in hope" it will return to condition or get better isnt doing justice to the fish. As this hobby is about the beauty of Nishikigoi, keeping Hikkui raveaged fish is beyond what this hobby is about.

I have seen and heard of hobbyist buying doctered GoSanke from dealers and breeders with Hikkui only for it to reappear several months later after having the fish in the pond. So BUYER beware!!!

Sorry you had to lose those fish -- but thanks for the excellent reference pix.

As for discussing hikui, we had a good one re: the causes (unknown) and cures (none) just last Apr/May:
