What's the roofing material? Looks like the sun light can penetrate very well.

The cross-pieces are cedar, covered with approx. 68% shadecloth. So, 32% of direct sun comes through. The pond is shaded by a large tree on the east side until about 1pm, resulting in of the pond getting low light until afternoon. During the winter months, when the sun is lower in the sky and the tree is leafless (leaves drop in December mainly), the pond receives more light, but the sun is not as intense. ...Long answer. I consider the degree of sunlight important for the condition of koi in clear water, but I am not sure what is the best exposure. I think bright shade is likely best.

    thanks Mike.
My pond is not shaded at all. My main concern is not only the sun light, which starts at about 5:30 in the morning and disappears at about 7pm during the summer, but also the amount of rain water that goes into the pond.

It would be good to provide shade.

Rain is an issue that gets differing responses depending on location. Where there is high levels of air pollution, rain can be acidic. This can be adverse if the pond is low in alkalinity. It may not matter where the pond is high in alkalinity. In areas where rainfall is not acidic, it is not as much of an issue. A bigger concern is if the pond receives run-off from the surrounding land when it rains. Stormwater run-off is virtually always tainted with organics from the surrounding land, and in many areas will pick up fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals used in the area. A pond should be designed to avoid this. Once in place, preventing rub-off entering the pond becomes difficult. A low wall around the pond may be feasible to minimize run-off.
