A Queston about spawning females and deaths

I have been reading the other thread about the avoidance of spawning females due to the risk of injury and death.

I have bred koi every year since my teens. With over 20 seasons and more spawns than I can count, I have never once had a death or an injury. Likewise, my fellow Ozzies backyard spawn every year with next to no problems.

I do a natural spawn, one female with 1 males in small pond of only a few thousand litres. I have used 2 males as well, without issue. I do not do anything special. Give them some spawning material and leave them too it - for several hours. The size of the females and males are usually around 60cm.

What is it that leads to the issues reported on this board as we do not seem to have the problems others experience.

I believe the risks are much increased in the typical pond where there is no spawning media, resulting in the koi running against the hard surfaces of the pond or being pushed against rocks decorating the pond edges.
