I am sorry but I didn't read every post in this very nice thread, but I have a few questions...

What made you decide to go with this type of filtration unit?
It seems to me that the bio-filtration needs could have been easily met with a smaller footprint, not to mention cheaper media, that will be easier to clean. (not trying to bash here, just putting it out there)

Why did you have the contractor seal the walls with different colors, when eventually it will all be green?

Are you going to have some kind of deck cover or similar, over the long bio-filter?
Falling leaves and such will be a real pain in the butt to dig out of the Jap Mats.

And finally why did you choose to use that kind of retro skimmer?
For the amount of money you spent in fish, I would hate to see some of the get hurt by either flashing against it or getting curios.

Other than those few questions the remodel looks great, and the fish are outstanding! I wish I could come visit.

    Zac

pond is not yet done. Still waiting for the post to arrive and the tarp so that we can put on the shade. As far as the color of the chambers it was painted like that so that we can see the build up of waste.

    Zac,
Please read through the whole thread so that you can understand the whole topic . The jap mat came from the previous bio chamber that we converted from bio to settlement chamber. As far as media are concern Mike H and yours truly are concerned it is a matter of preference. We decided to take the traditional Japanese way. We will install a clarity unit and put some k1 media at the end of the long throw bio. The kois in the pond are not mine. I own one which is the GC from Gardena ZNA socal this year. The others are owned by a dealer who happens to be a very good friend of mine. He is the new kid on the block (Mike Hernande). This is his design and he has designed and constructed a lot of ponds in Manila. By the way my pond was built by Frank Morales as well as the add on long throw biofiltration. The whole chamber drains in a minute and a half all 1400 gallon.
