| Interesting! So you think I'm somehow involved in the EA business? Now that IS interesting! What pray tell, gives you this idea? I have no EA filter units, no media and several years back bought an answer unit at full price. Bought the other one I own used. So HOW do I have an EA interest- please explain.
In truth, I own more Bacteria house than Kaldnes ( that would be 100 pounds or so of BH and ZERO pounds of kaldnes!)
As for the tourist stuff- wrong again! Been going once or twice a year for 15-16 years now. I've gone as collector, buyer, Tourist, koi show visitor, on personal business, to ZNA meetings and even judged and shadow judged a few koi shows. I've won a few significant awards at koi shows over there and have had a ten year plan to study breeders in the North and the South as well as judge their shows, compete in their shows and learn about the broker business over there ( mostly Chiba and Komachi City). I also wanted to buy koi to grow out there to better learn the range of possibilities, the limits of the mud pond and the benefits of teh mud pond.
I've had frequent visits by Japanese to my home here in the states as a result of this time spent in Japan. Marusada stayed for a week with his wife, Kato came and stayed over night twice, Takada came for breakfast one day as did Toru and Tasi ( Taiwan). I've been the lone caucasian at a well know breeders private family dinner during Harvest celebration, the last foreigner to spend a day with Dr Kuroki before he passed away ( I will always treasure the signed and wax seal he placed on some personal correspondance and his final book of his life). Perhaps the most touching experience I have had as a result of my travels to befriend these strange people occurred just after 9/11 attacks. When they heard about the attact, a few of my friends in Japan got together and placed a call to New York to see if I was alright as I had taken them their went they came to visist me and they assumed I also worked in the world trade center where I took them to dinner. I was very touched.
I also got involved with a young breeder/ dealer out of Chiba who wanted to import used corvettes to Japan! That was wild! Never knew how complicated Japanese import laws were! I've traveled with wholesale buyer only groups in which I was the only amateur and it was an amazing learning experience. I acted as an advisor to more than a few buying 2 and 3 million yen fish.
So if you insist on trying to reduce me to one of those junket goers , I suggest you think twice.
As for my referring to old koi magazines so often as an explanation of where my 'koi depth' starts and ends- I get that a lot. It seems to make others more comfortable in explaining how it is I know what I know. It is true, I have an extensive library on koi and much of it is based in early Rinko and Nichirin magazines. But if you look closer, you will notice I am also an author in many of those magazines- US, Japanese and British. I also had a small contribution in K2K. Our local magazines ( KOI USA and MAKC ) have a more than a few articles written by yours truly. So I am emersed in this hobby and on both sides of it- author and student, expert and beginner. It's all part of my personal journey in this life time hobby.
In the area of koi themselves, I have finished or grown out 5 grand and reserve champions, numerous best of size and best of variety. I have a best of size in the All Japan and a best baby in the ZNA All Japan. I won the first Koi America when it was sponsored by Shinkokai with a Hiroi Seiji sanke. Won best male in size at the All Japan and that is one of the few male gosanke that is on the cover of Rinko that I can think of? Won AKCA's fish of year award for MAKC.
On the 'contribution to the hobby side' I've been a regional rep to AKCA, a VP of the entire club, a representative in Japan at a ZNA district meeeting, a show chairman of a very large koi show more than once, a founder of the first health hot line for koi, an author, a planner of an AKCA seminar, A ZNA judging seminar organizer, trained hobbyists to inject fish/treat fish, given dozens of public talks, awarded friendship awards to members of at least 25 clubs, was head of the AKCA KHV steering committee, was a member of the three man committee that rewrote the AKCA bylaws, as an advisor to the AKCA health program, was a contributor to two of the AKCA instruction booklets on koi health and diseases---
On the Judging front, I think I'm at around 52 shows judged now? I'm AKCA and ZNA certified. Judged in America, Europe and Asia. I'm most proud of doing the Oita show , one of the oldest shows in Japan and the home club of ZNA founder, Dr Kuroki.
So my friend, call me a simple tourist if you like. And it is true, I have no Korean next door neighbor, but still, I think the resume is solid?
