Those short tail Ryukins are VERY nice. I especially like the last one on the top row. That is quite an elaborate set up too.

I like fancy goldfish. But I have to say, at times I feel it is a mistake to purposely deform living things for our entertainment. As you know, FGs have a hard time in life. They have swimbladder issues, osmotic regulation issues and generally are much weaker than natural bodied non deformed goldfish. At times I look at my FGs as cruel genetic experiments. To each his own.

I couldn't agree more. I used to have 100gal tank and kept 6 oranda in it. Everyone had the problems you mention. Lost everyone of them. Then got rid of the tank. Too much hastle to my liking.

I think Man likes the challenge

let's take a look at Dogs, that were engineered to man's liking from the wolf. There is a long line of inherent problems with many breeds, hip, skin, sight etc

I think there is a purpose in each new breed of goldfish and part of it has to do with the challenge to create a new shape or color. So much of the Fancy goldfish history is tied to china and things like lionheads (pekinese in dogs) are tied in with the culture.

In any sport or hobby there are good fits and not so good, so i think it's good for all of us to know where we stand. There is so much room in the koi hobby to find one's comfort level, that I think it is so in Fancy Goldfish. There are many beautiful new breeds that
don't have exaggerated bodies or wen that lend themselves to carefree keeping like wakins, shibunkins, hibuna, sarassa.

But no matter where you stand, I think we can agree that the dedication of the keeper to provide healthy conditions to overcome some of the inherent difficulties with certain breeds is a tribute to their keeping ability and general knowledge. And as water keepers ourselves,we can acknowledge the challenge of any fish keeping.

For us cracy koi keepers with goldfish tendencies, maybe that's why longfin koi were created!
