my point is different than your when posting this question... it is not a personal question whether what I call my koi, my kids or you call your koi your herd... it does not waste my time a bit my friend even though I am a very busy man;-))

It just wasted time of everone but you so hope that makes you happy . So posts that are trivia should be posted on the outside file in the first place as time is wasted trying to find posts that have been overiden by trivia .

What is it with people this time of year? Cabin fever or what?

Dinh asked a perfectly good question in an attempt to help his 3rd grade child utilize the proper verbiage when referring to a group of koi. Trivial? Who cares if it was or not or whether anyone took offense when they should not have. Its about learning and in this case for a young child who shows interest in their dad's hobby. For those that took it in any other way than that I would say you are missing the boat when it comes to learning and sharing the hobby with others.

Thanks, Steve! I completely agree; Dinh just wanted to post a question to help him educate his beautiful little daughter who is learning to appreciate koi as her daddy does.

Here's my thought on the original question - no internecine koi board politics implied or intended: I've never cared for the term "herd" for koi - it seems inelegant to me and relates more to cattle, IMHO. I don't like "collection" because it seems impersonal and doesn't carry the feeling and emotion I want to convey. I guess I just refer to my koi as "koi." If I had to give them a descriptive term it would be "school" even though they don't really school most of the time, but that generally refers to fish so that's what I'd use, if I had to use anything.

I just call mine water pigs....of course when I'm telling someone all about them I refer to them as my babies..Since we don't actually have human kids..... then all of our pets tend to be referred to as our babies ..Hey if you can get a 3rd grader interested in anything other than video games...then I say you have accomplished a lot....Its nice to see a daughter is interested in her daddy's hobby....
