To select the right term,,,,first define what you are trying to label.

The term collection very well describes the group of koi from the owner's perspective.

The term school very well describes the social relationship and behavior of the koi between themselves.

I think the young lady can and should use both terms....depending on what she wants to communicate to others.

DCNY,
it is listed under fish and i don't see no herd under the definition of fish.

Thank You Dinh,

I put my glasses on and whallah I could see...

Even though they are not in dictionary yet, they are still fish and that definition would be correct for koi, since koi is a fish species.

Many "English" words came from foreign.... that why in English dictionary always specifies the Etymology such as etymology for koi is : Japanese.

Online Dictionay has koi, but not nishikigoi.... Well, nishikigoi is new word indeed....

I think the term "collection" applies very well to my koi, although I don't really call them that. I collect koi like I would antiques. I look for something very specific, enjoying the search almost as much as the aquisition. I have several ponds and sometimes switch them around to create more balance within the living "painting" I am trying to create.
