I affectionately call my three Omosako tosai a "gaggle." Gaggle is actually the correct term for 3 geese. Linguistically, there is no harm nor foul in calling something anything one wants as long as it's understood by at least one other person. And in proper English, there are such things as metaphors, which is what "herd" or "gaggle" or "squadron" would be classified as....

A school of koi.

Maybe a shoal of koi.

A few koi.

Many koi. Kois?

I just can't get "herd" and "koi" to work together for me.

A herd of cattle, a flock of sheep, a herd of goats. A herd of koi? No way that will fly in Texas.

Pretty sure if you say herd in Texas they'll think you got a couple hundred head of steer out in the north forty .

I just refer to them as "my koi". If I called them herd I would need a sheep dog to herd them around. I suppose a heron could fill in for the sheep dog
