Dinh, Herd-Unit sounds stupid to be honest with you....To me Herd sounds to much like "Terd"...Hey look at my pond, you see my Terds. Doesnt sound good.

Anyways, still think about the Show for 2008...We will see will let you guys know when everything is finalized.

Whatever triggered this thread, it is linguistically interesting. Generally, a grouping of fish is considered a 'school'. When koi are in a group, they do not exhibit many of the schooling behaviors of typical schooling fish. Startle them, or disrupt their environment, and they do school. But on the average day pondside, it is a bit of a stretch to say the koi are a school. They are simply a group of fish constrained by the pond dimensions to be together.

The behavior of the loose assemblage of a group of koi in a pond is more like that of a cattle herd than a school of minnows (or tuna). (They even graze! ) And when hungry koi race up for food, it does give an impression of a stampede. "Herd" can seem a more comfortable description of koi than "school".

The flexibility of the English language is that a word can be given new meaning by usage. Not all languages have that flexibility. There has to be a social acceptance of creative word use for it to occur. In English, there is cultural encouragement of creative uses.

Well said, my friend, and there's absolutely no reason you should be attacked for asking a reasonable question.

Stand your ground.

Cattle are by nature more loners that herd animals................................they are herded together. The do come together more at night than in the day.........................

Koi are more like pigs when it comes to feeding time, jump all over one another, gobbel food down like its the last meal. Some cattle will race (younger ones) for food and some will patiently walk up and then take control and move the younger ones away.......................

Well said Dinh, and a good question
How many of us on Bito would ever refer to our living jewels as "herds" just don't sound right.

We cannot call a koi a herd anymore than we can call a cow a herd. A herd is a group. I've heard people call their koi pigs and cows as an analogy to their eating habits. I've heard "herd" used as an affectionate metaphor for one's collection of koi. It is a harmless description by and large and I just don't understand how the linguistics of this seems so huge to people.

But some people seem to think calling a koi a "piece" is not derogatory. Shall we call this place "Piece-Bito," then? It's as inappropriate as "Herd-Bito" would be.

What an ignorant argument this has turned into....
