KOI vs HERD

Here are online definitions:

koi

herd

3 entries found.

herd[1,noun]herd[2,verb]ride[1,verb]
Main Entry: 1herd Pronunciation: \herd\ Function: noun Etymology: Middle English, from Old English heord; akin to Old High German herta herd, Middle Welsh cordd troop, Lithuanian kerdžius shepherd Date: before 12th century 1 a: a number of animals of one kind kept together under human control b: a congregation of gregarious wild animals2 a (1): a group of people usually having a common bond <a herd of tourists> (2): a large assemblage of like things b: the undistinguished masses : <isolate the individual prophets from the herd — Norman Cousins>
— herd·like \-līk\ adjective

---------------------

Seems like they are exchangeable. Question is, which one is better use for "koi"?

thx,

Nope, Herd is the only way to refer to it. Not only is it the only way it is actually best.

an English teacher would tell you to use school of fish and a herd of sheep.

for ZNA NorCal, use a herd of members

The question of there being a "point" is still there...
Den of Lions, Covey of Quail, Flock of Geese, Herd of Cattle, Pack of Wolves, School of Fish...
Its all Semantics if you ask me

As an English major and only and English Major, school is the proper term for a group of fish. Herd generally refers to mammals only. For instance, you never hear of a herd of birds, it is a flock. However, as an endearing term for one's own school of fish in American English, herd will work just fine.

I take issue with individual koi being referred to as a "piece." I find that much more demeaning and inaccurate than herd. Look up piece in the dictionary. It ain't a fish.

Sometimes, when my fish are swimming around, it looks like a squadron gliding through the liquid environment.

And no, I do not fly AND am not flying (on something) at this time.

To me squadron sounds better than a herd...........a certain person always brags about his herd, so school works better for me..............................................
