Growing the hobby can only be good if taken as growing the knowledge of individuals within... Quality over quantity. The masses do not have the obsession necessary... Those that develop the obsession will seek out the real hobby.

Edit: Seems this is my first post here so...
I am Stan Ellis from Nova Scotia, Canada. Internet is my gateway to koi though we do get to a couple major shows in US each year.
I have been coming here for a few years. I find this site a great source of information... more so as I grow in koi keeping.
Thanks to those that know what they are doing...
welcome on baord, my friend Stan.... Glad to see your first post here even it's in Outside ;-))

I've known Stan for, what 4-5 years now? Stan and his now fully capable fish handling wife Kathy are great Koi hobbyists. They sat back (Stan can be kind of quiet when you first meet him), listened and learned. He is build one heck of a koi pond I might add. See ya'll in Orlando....BTW, Kathy, will you be doing and fish handling in Orlando?

I built a 20000 gal pond. 7' deep, three BDs, two 4" gravity flow skimmers, five 3" mid-levels, twelve 1.5" TPR/GPRs. Vertical concrete block sides with 1.5" insulation inside and 1" outside. Insulated in ground filter room. Heated. The construction is posted on KS... not sure if I can post a link here??? Still have the exterior rock work to do this year.

Have 7 tosai in it now as it is new... Just picked them up at Koi America in the fall. Plan to hold 20 koi. Will take a couple years to gain experiance before we start building a quality collection.

Kathy's back has been bothering her lately so she will not be bent over any show tanks lifting fish... Well she is not allowed to anyway . See you there.

In yet another example of bad info on message boards, I recently read that 'masoten' was a deadly compound not recommended for fish? Masoten is a brand of Trichlofon, a common organophosphate used in many tropical fish over-the-counter medications for flukes. The newbie should handle this product with care and use only when needed. I use this exclusively for flukes in a ratio blend with mebendazole. It is effective then against both skin and gill flukes.
scary how things get passed on to newbies. JR

JR, like I said I am very new and I do not know all of the politics between you and KP where this thread was posted but why don't you rebut them over there? If you know something on the subject, and you obviously do, post so that we the new people might learn from your vast experience on the hobby. The two post by cppond and Karl do not claim to be correct but only what they found on other websites. If we can be civil and respectful your knowledge can be of great use to the new hobbyist over there. I know you and Stephen do not get along but if you were to post and avoid such confrontations it would be for the good of the hobby you obviously love. Like I said I am new and don't know jack squat and will be the first to admit it, but those are my two cents.

John,

Its a little hard to rebut when your banned.
Thats the way its run over there, if you disagree with St Ephen or don't like things he does, he (they) will ban you....................................
Notice it does not work that way here or other places............only there.
But even when bans are lifted it does not take any time at all before the cycle starts again. So why would grown men want to deal with men who act in such a childish behavior???

Thanks for filling John in on some things, Bill.

John, you seem like a very honest and pleasant guy. You will notice I mentioned no board or name. You filled in names and board so I assume you did a seach for the topic? At any rate, the comments were in the context of this thread in the latest focus- the value of internet message boards. I just found this topic while cruising and it was so typical of the lack of perspective out there , I thought I would use it as a prime example.
John I couldn't possibly post on all these posts that lack perspective or contain bad or misleading information. I can only caution you and others to be very careful.

On the subject of organophosphates, they were one of the very first compounds approved for use in fish for ectoparasites. The entire salmon industry depended on organos for many years and our own EPA registered trichlorfon as a parasiticide against anchor worms and fish lice and gill flukes on goldfish and bait fish. There is a long history of it's use in Japan , England and the USA for koi. As a result there is a large body of information and experience out there on this compound.
It is not dangerous in general but it has unpredictable effects in certain water conditions ( pH , hardness and temperature) so it should not be used casually. It also can disrupt the environment and new laws have reined in it's indescriminate use in outdoor settings.
There have been some cases of human nerve damage among koi keepers when it was handled carelessly with bare hands ( including stirring it in buckets with hands and fingers !).
But in controlled conditions it works quite well. The pet store product 'fluke tabs' is made up of this organo plus mebendazole.
Hope this helps. JR

John W. . . .

Bees fly around pollinating flowers -- teachers don't.

The best teachers anchor the best teaching boards.

This is one of them. That one is not.

Ergo, JR's point: Beware.
