Once upon a time, in a Floridian galaxy far, far away, there was a one eyed jet eye who decide to do some ice fishing. He gathered his things and set up on the ice. Just then he heard a large reverbarating voice from above, "There is no fish under the ice." He looked up and all around but could not discern the source of the voice. He was about to resume when once again he heard the loud reverbarating voice say, "There are no fish under the ice."

The one eyed jet eye looked up once again and all around and said, "Is that you Oby Wan Koinobi"

"No" screamed the the voice, "Its the ice rink owner you DA, there are no fish under the freaking ice"!

Ice Wars...Part Duex

Hearing the voice of the ice rink owner, the Floridian one eyed jet eye discounted the information....after all, it wasn't from the internet.

He sat

and sat

and sat

and sat

and sat...........................................

No, Luke. I think Fujita-san, Mark Gardner and JR are all conspiring against you.

Ice Wars....Part Trois

As the Floridian one eyed jet eye sat, the X Winged Zamboni swooped in.

Dazed from the encounter and without his internet light sabre he left the Niigata Ice arena (so close but yet so far) nad engaged his hyper drive to the planet Plainfield in the Illinois star system, Mecca to the R&G Empire where it is in fact known to have fish under the ice.

Oh Mark you didn't get any cookies. I made them a day ago just before this came outside. With the weather starting to warm up (40's here) I can make some more.

Thanks, Tom, I'm ready for some hot saki -- and it ought to go well with Mark's Alice B. Toklas brownies.

Cheryl . . .

Put another batch in the oven; we might be here for awhile.

Ice it down or ice it up?

Back to that theory of crushed by ice. If this were true the world would be a much different place then we know it now. The only reason fish can live in lakes in cold areas is due to one factor...ice floats. One liter of water weighs 9% lighter then one liter of the same liquid (fresh water) frozen. Water is at its densest state at 40 degrees F or 4 degrees C.

Now if you were to freeze a fish in bucket of water, I could see the extra 9% expansion factor could crush the fish.

Assuming you are referring to my reference of being 'crushed', I never said 'ice', I said 'snow', whilst quoting someone else who happens to be one of the most respected 'authors' on Nishikigoi in Japan.

This seems to be becoming a pointless discussion but I'll add some photos to explain my point, just for the sake of clarity.

Now, the first pic was taken 7th January, note that the pond is frozen, this is one week into the 2 month period of snowfall.

The last pic was taken the other day with the snow melting and water flowing at a rate down it's overflow pipe.

Between the first and the last pic these ponds went from having a layer of ice to being full of snow, FACT!

Would/could a Koi survive underneath?

With tons of snow bearing down on it would a Koi survive underneath?

With the water freezing and wanting to expand what would give first? The ton's of snow or a fragile Koi?

Fish live in frozen lakes, absolutely, no disagreement, that's a fact. These aren't natural lakes where nature deemed it appropriate for Koi to live and survive season after season. These are shallow man made ponds cut into a mountainside with the sole purpose of growing them during the summer!
