... and that is the reason those 55 gallon drums are so popular.

Two stacked 55 gallon barrels makes a nice filter.
The top barrel is a "shower" filter and the bottom barrel is a submerged bio media filter.
Two of these stacked barrel filters should handle a 1000 gallon pond if you do not get carried away with stocking levels.
You can skip the vortex or experiment with it.
I can direct you to a big Southern California Koi dealer that uses these stacked drum filters.
It would be worth the expense and time to make a weekend trip down South and see and take notes on their construction.

With salt water reef aquariums, filter size and efficiency is a major concern.

With an outside DIY Koi pond, filter size is not as big of an issue.

You can build a single 55 gallon barrel filter with about 35 gallons of K1 media that will not provide the filtering capacity of two stacked (four 55 gallon barrels) with some other cheaper and not-so-high tech bio media.

You asked for tips from others who have been down the road. I am trying to save you a couple of years of wandering down a side road of experimenting and experience on your own.

A trip like that will have to wait till after September. We have alot of things happening right now some of them are preperation for the show. BTW Steve I am showing after all. The club has also asked to help remove fish from a pond of one of our charter members who passed away 2 years ago. His widow is having the house fumigated. While this is being done she is going to have some repairs made to the pond. This is going to be a huge undertaking. She has alot of fish that need to be temporarily housed.

My stocking levels for this 1000 gal pond are currently 5 at the moment. 2, 13 inch and 3, 8 or 9 inch. I have three more that will join them in roughly 2 weeks. They are all about 5 inches.

Ric, I allways appreciate your willingness to share information. I am thinking about talking to Sean about stacking the barrels

There is no rush, but I highly advise it.

You should try and coordinate the trip with some other SoCal Koi event.

When you get serious about making the trip, let me know, and I can help you with Koi spots of interest.
