    Cool

    WOW, I remembered my password!
Not sure if anyone cares or not.. lol But I've finally got the $$$ and going to get my huge pond strung with rebar, and shotcreted. I think I will then have the contractor render it with mortar/xypex and black dye. I will then be broke, but I can slowly build my filter pit and plumb it as moneys come in.
Just wanted to throw up an update to the Koi-Bito folks!

It's on, I finished glueing all the pipes in the pond... finished air pressure testing all pipes, shaped the hole with a shovel. and my concrete guy will be here Monday evening to start tieing rebar... the plan is he will shoot it this Saturday... 12" bond beam. I have 2' above ground.. it will be 12" thick all the way down to 3' below ground... mass rebar, and mass concrete! pictures through the whole process! I'm STOKED! been two years since I've started this project, This is the biggest obstacle I've had to over come... coming up wiuth the money for this portion has been really hard! Were finally here! WOOHOO!!!!!!Pictures to come!!!! Mike

What is the game plan for a sealant? Will you use pool plaster, an epoxy product, fiber glass,....???

MCA, between you and a few others, I made the decision to go with concrete instead of a rubber liner... now I need the rest of the recipe to finish this??? I was told Mortar, xypex and black dye...... but could I use plaster then like a pond armor on top of the concrete? the concrete finish wont be so pretty... but it will be 12" thick! gonna be structurally SOUND! i'm so excited... but yes I need a smooth and clean water proof sealant, recommendations? -Mike

If I were doing poured concrete, I would do xypex or similar. If doing block walls or concrete walls without xypex, I think xypex has a product that you use to make up a plaster and coat the walls....much like plastering a pool. From my understanding, shotcrete or gunite have a lot of air voids in them. I am not sure if you can order water sealant additives in either. For sealing pool make with shotcrete or gunite, I usually see pool plaster used. I know of several koi ponds that have used black pool plaster. Personally I think the best sealant is like to be fiberglass. Using it in koi ponds is very common in the UK. But I imagine it is very hard to find anyone in the States to glass a pond.

Best of luck. Keep us informed.

Thanks MCA, I think I'm going to go with a mixture of Mortar, Xypex and black Dye.... at about 1/2" thick. I got it shot and have some pictures to share
