    How much bio media?

    How many cu ft of lava rock is needed to biologically filter an indoor koi pond?

    rule of thumb 1/3 of your pond size

    I had read that the rule of thumb would be to have one third of the total volume of water
    Lava rock averages at 400-600sq feet per cubic foot , some maybe even lower depending on the composition .(sometimes lower than 100)

    So doing a rough calculation if you have a 1000 gallon of water - 1000/300 (taking only 300 sq Ft )3 cubic feet would be enough ... 4 to be on the safer side ....
    Just make sure that other people are using the lava rock from the source you are buying as filter media ....
    Also smaller your chunks are the more is your surface area .
