Thumbs up protein skimmer..Awesome!!!

I saw a thread on koiphen about a DIY protein skimmer. I figured..what the heck? I already had a 900gph pump laying around and an air pump with manifold and 6 airstones. A trip to home depot...cost about $10-15. I also had some 2"pvc..so I used that. I built a skimmer similar to the one in this picture(lifted off koiphen). It is Da Bomb!!! Took out 2 gallons of brown garbage the first day. Took about 1-1.5 gallons each day for the next 2 days. My water has never been more clear!!! Not a drop of foam on the surface of the water. Really happy with this project...Highly recommended!!!

Protien Skimmer

I am glad that you had such good success with this protien skimmer, I have been thinking of trying this ever since I saw the original post. Can you show a picture of how the skimmer looks hooked up? Joyce

Protien skimmers are awesome, they use them on all of the tanks at the Dutch Koi Show, with great results.

Here's an interesting thread on an Austrailian Koi board about protein skimmers. There's some detail on construction. Looks similar to this one.

Very interesting. I wonder how big their ponds are. Doesn't look like it will handle my 10,000 gal. I'd probably need several of these, and if they're using a 40L air pump for EACH ONE, that's more electrical outlets than I have!!!

Thumbs up

My pond is 7,000 gallons. I have a 4,000 gallon pump from the bottom and a homemade surface skimmer with a 900 gph pump. So I used the 900gph to run through the protein skimmer from the surface skimmer. I have 2 air pumps running. One in the pond and one in the open style filter(green machine copy..but 275gallons). So I put that air pump to run through the protein skimmer with 6 airstones. . The skimmer sits in the open filter. the outflow water exits under water, and the foam exits about 1-2 inches above the water surface in the open filter. It has been taking out 1-2 gal per day of dark brown liquid. I could adjust it for a more dry foam..but who cares? Let it take 2+gallon per day...no big deal. water has gotten so clear with this addition. Very happy!!!
