Newbie pump question

We are in the planning stages of building a pond with a large structured waterfall. The fall go over a straight edge and will be 6 feet wide. We want A LOT of noise from this waterfall.

The pond will be 7 feet by 12 feet and two feet deep.

Questions:

What size pump would provide a strong waterfall of this size?

Any brand recommendations?

Any other bits of advice?

Thanks
Don

Is this a koi pond? If so, 2' deep is not going to be deep enough. You should consider at least 4' deep, and maybe deeper depending on your area.

I have to confess that this not planned to be a koi pond right now. But, maybe I should go deeper just in case.

As long as your going to all the trouble of a new pond. Make it as deep as you can. And install a 4" bottom drain.

I agree!! A drain, even in a watergarden, makes cleaning so much easier. I had a 4" drain in my lily pond. At the time, it was not connected to a filter, but was used only for cleaning. I opened the valve every couple of weeks to keep the line flushed out and drained the pond for annual cleaning. that drain made pond cleaning a breeze. Now I use the pond to grow out small koi and I am very glad that drain was there. It gravity feeds a filter now so the koi have a healthy pond.

Now to answer your actual question, 100gph per 1" of waterfall is recommended. So for 72" wide waterfall you would be looking for 7,200 gph. I use two sequence 4400gph pumps for my waterfall. It is 48" wide. I haven't used any of W.Lim's pumps, but I think one of the Wave II series pumps would work for you Wave II Series - W. Lim Corporation - 2007

Are you saying that you have the full 8800 gph going over your fall? Can you take a closer picture?

I would say more like 8000gph.
Pump 1 is pumping through 120 foot of 3" pipe about 8' up the hill.
Pump 2 is pumping through 70 foot of 4" pipe about 2' up the hill.

There is a second waterfall further back. Hopefully this picture from a few years ago will be better.

Awesome. Thanks for the information. Looks like a very nice amount of water flowing over the fall.

Make sure you allow yourself some way of bypassing the falls or reducing the flow, you may want a lot of noise now, but down the road the noise may not be so welcome. My pond has mid level water returns and a waterfall, all regulated by ball valves, so I can increase/decrease the flow as desired. I just have to remember not to shut off all the valves at the same time
