If your still going to install a DIY bakki shower then I would spring for a box of BH media and a tds meter if you want to see the fruits of your results.

I can't complain about LR performance, but a little input from Birdman and Sangreal might be good. They both use Feather Rock in theirs. Light weight, open cell structure, greater surface area for colonization than LR or BH. I've been thinking about making the switch.
