Ain't nothin' cheap about building a pond!!

Amen!

Koi keeping does not have to eat up your 401K. But it definitely not an inexpensive hobby either. DIYing can save you lots on the capital costs of the pond and filter systems.

do the earth a favor by recycling used materials.

get free old carpet from most carpet stores. my friend used carpet for his pond and so did I. it works and it's free.

Has anyone who has used nylon carpet as underlayment had any problems with it, such as smell from mildew?

If it did mildew, I'd never know it. It is sealed up under the liner and a whole lot of water. My guess is it probably does smell but the fish never complained about it.
