Is my filtration system adequate?

Hello,
I am building a pond of about 6' by 9' by 4'. It will be equipped with a small mechanical filtration using a piece of Japanese Mat and the pump used is Omyu 180watt which produces about 25 tonne of water per hour. It will have a Bakki shower with about 80kg of bacteria house. I will also have 2pcs of air stone.

Is this set up adequate. Plan to keep three kois in it.

If there is anything wrong please let me know as soon as possible as the pond is being constructed as we speak by a contractor who specialises in koi ponds.

Thanks
Mingaun

Are you using botton drains? TPRs?, skimmers?, any other bio filtration? what about mech/fines filtration?

It has a bottom drain. No skimmers. No other bio and mech filter other than the one mentioned.

This sounds very lacking to me. Normally what we like to do is run the bottom drain to a large settlement chamber. This gives the heavier than water solids a place where they have time to settle out. From the settlement chamber then gravity flow to the bio filter. There ate several possibility's for this, my 1st choice is a moving bed filter. Then your pump, then to TPRs.
I would run a skimmer to a 2nd pump, then to some kind of mech/fines filter, then to your shower.

Will consider what you have just said, but might be tough because of space constraints.

Mingaun,
Their was a thread here regarding Bakki Media. Pump is taking water directly from BD drain. I hope I'm right. But it should be enough.

Just a quick update. Spoke to my dealer who is doing the pond and he feels that the filtration is adequate and that is the exact system he uses in his shop for all his ponds. I guess no pond will ever be perfect and i believe mine is not perfect too. I think it is important for me to learn the weaknesses of this system and prepare myself for the possible problems that could arise.

It is ok to keep 3 koi in it but not Momotaro tosai which for $1500 each are likely to grow to 80cm . You would be better with 3 Malesian koi at $50 each . Otherwise the minimum size should be 8x 12 x 6ft deep . With one bottom drain simply that a koi that grows larger needs that room for excersize . I would stop and rethink everything to make sure what you really want can be accomplished whith the pond you are planning . Visit some koi ponds a dealers holding tanks are not koi ponds .

Eugene

Hello Eugene

I realise the predicament i am in as well. The size of my pond is a limitation. All dealers also have to make a sale and sometimes i also have to take their words with a pinch of salt. According to him i can put 5 koi but base on my logic i feel 3 is max. Now that you are telling me even three is not possible, how about 2?

Yup i am willing to keep only 2 high quality koi. I am desperate. I have no land in my house, the only land i have is an indoor atrium that i have dug to the maximum. This is my best. I want to keep the koi not to show but as a pet that my whole family can grow to like and enjoy their company. I have an 8 month old child that i hope will grow together with the koi.

Putting cheap kois is a possibility but they tend to look not so nice when big, whilst i like kois that can get better with age. I hope you can see my difficulty here. I would be willing even to get one very good quality koi if that is what it takes. Just one I heard some where that they need others to socialise but hopefully we can provide this koi with plenty of care and love. I would do all that is possible to make the koi happy.

Do you think this plan is feasible? To be honest i dont think i can keep cheap kois. I am a bit fussy when come to these things. So it is either one or two kois. BTW i cannot abandon my project anymore as there is a huge hole in my house already

Thanks again Eugene for your concern.

Mingaun
Edit: Maybe i did not make myself clear, there is a bottom drain of 4" piping and i just receive news that the pond can be about 5' deep. Weird shape though, looks like a well.

You keep adding information so my advice keeps changing . I am 71 years old and I love koi I could have had better koi but instead I have put $45,000 in my granchildrens educational found . Two of my favorite koi are not big fish so the size does not really matter neither were they expensive as I paid less than $500 for both . There are some nice Malesian koi of low cost buy them and study them and use your money for an education for your child . A koi at the auction will grow big and koi when they grow big also need more water to swim in all these koi at auction are female so need more space and excersise or with your climate they will grow fat and end up getting egg bound . So follow my advice and one day you can get a big pond with big fish but in life priorities are important .
Regards
Eugene
