new pond

Hello,
I will be trying to build my own pond soon and i have heard that some people do not use a fliter system instead they use a open system (water in water out) with bottom drain.can someone explain how this works and maybe a diagram??????
Thanks

I don't think... flow through = no filtration.
a fitration system turns the pond over at least once an hour.
that would be a lot to replace with flow through

perhaps I am way off on this...can someone else chim in?

new pond w/ pH swing to high side

I'm new to this forum.
I just built the new pond for 3 wks. The water was clear until a friend of mine told me not to turn on the UV so the algae can grow quicker. I did that and now the water turned green. It's too green that I can't see the koi. I checked the pH and it went up to 8.4+ from 8.0. I saw couple of koi flashing and jumping up the water.

What should I do?

many thanks in advance.

I think you might want to stick to having a filter in there somewhere.........

Turn the UV back on. The algae is causing ph swings by using up the carbonates. You can buffer it with baking soda.

If you are interested in seeing some pond plumbing diagrams that help understand concepts and placement of pumps, UV's and filters, consider visiting this site that shows diagrams.....

I turned on the UV, changed water 10% for the last two days, added muraic acid.
The pH is stable at 7.8 to 8.0 now. Amonia is at 0.25. 0 on Nitrite and Nitrate.

thank you.
