koiczar, i used a hammer and chisel and split the feather rock intosmaller pieces.....i didn't go as small as the bacteria house media but most of the pieces were close....and it splits fairly easy

Thanks. So, I take it you prefer this over regular lava rock?

i have been using lava rock in my 4 tray shower for over a year now, or maybe it's two. it's working good, staying nice and clean. i am flowing about 9000 gph through my shower.
The neatest thing is where the shower water goes into the pond my waterfall has a small catch basin. Every now and then if DOCs rise i get a build up of foam here in the morning I can easily scoop out. Like a free FF.

Thanks for the follow up input guys. That's the water quality/clarity I'm looking for. My load has just gotten to be too much for my existing filters to handle.

Not really. Pumice has a similarly porous structure, but the crystalline structure of Feather Rock is more akin to volcanic glass and extremely sharp edged when broken or cut. I've handled plenty of pumice with my bare hands, but feather rock is a leather glove job if you like your fingers.
