Start off with 6 koi of this size and when they get about 30 cm they will start getting bigger around in diameter and the length growth will stop. when this happens it's time to find a home for one or two that did not turn out as well as you wanted! By keeping few koi you have less problems!

remember it is better to underfeed then over feed! Also when first learning koi closest the the wild magoi can be stronger. Yamabuki ogon, Asagi, Shusui,
    Chagoi.

Gosanke-like kohaku, sanke and showa are next level. (learn on the easy ones! )

remember the secret to keeping koi is keeping water. do your chemistry!

Dick is as usual, spot on. Keep the water parameters (ph, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, gh, kh) in their respective ideal ranges and stable as much as possible. Other than ammonia and nitrite, the others can be a little outside ideal ranges...but STABLE. One of worse things we can do for our koi is have the water parameters jumping all over the place. It stresses the fish and stress is not good for anyone. There are lots of books available to teach about water parameters and how to measure them. A good place to look for books is on www.amazon.com and search in the book section for "koi"

Less fish and more water is always a good plan!
