Welcome to the board first of all, I dont know about starting with ammonia but I do know you should build up a health amount of bacteria in your system to age the water first.
The world sleeps as the chance to learn something new passes.

Norm meck, whose instructions on how to do so have been published in back issues of koi USA. Also i believe some special printed books on filtration from the AKCA also have specific instructions.

I too, wish to welcome you to our board. You'll have to tell us about your pond that it sounds like your getting up and running!
