    "Literal" meanings:

Nishiki: brocade (so Nishikigoi is "brocaded carp")
according to the little I have read, the term nishikigoi only began to be used after WWII, previously there had been a series of other terms for koi.

    Yamatonishiki : Japanese brocade

Brocade is a heavy, sumptuous type of fabric that is usually rich in design - often floral or leaves. I believe that the patterns are created from raised threads, like embroidery. It is generally shiny, at least the raised design part. In the past, brocaded fabrics were used for the clothing of nobility.

So, a brocaded carp is dressed in beautiful colors and patterns of fine quality, I reckon!
