I finally got some time to bowl my sanke. She is 12" and seems healthy. Good confirmation but nothing to write home about. There is a lot of stray hi and one can only hope it will clear up. The sumi is kind of a mess, my preference is more along the lines of my avatar. As this is more a competition on husbandry skills those issues don't bother me.

I haven't quite got the video skills down yet but I will work on that.

Little Firefly has settled in well with the Big Girls. I am just amazed at the difference in size between her and my Dainichi Tancho Showa (Daughter of Sakura) that I got last year. The TS was 1" bigger at the same time and right now she makes the Sanke looks so small, so I am really excited for the potential here.

As far as LF is concerned, if one can look beyond the pattern, and I do say if. She is a really nice little girl. Good confirmation, the head is a nice size and shape, I like the look of the fins and she has a pretty big mouth for her age. We all know she is a Japan cull, and one in a grow out, so it is rare to find confirmation, skin, size, and pattern in one of these events. If I had to give up something, I'm OK with it being pattern. She isn't a Tancho

            Pond update:

            The water temp is 77

Since she is not feeding by hand yet all she is eating:

Morning: Sakai Hakari Sinking Wheat Germ in the mornings
            Evening: EA Show.
On Saturday and Sunday they get an afternoon feeding of EA Show.

I will be moving to SH Hi Growth in a couple of weeks as soon as I finish the Wheat Germ. I will discontinue the EA Show until September or so.

that's my update and thanks for stopping by.

            15% water change every Sunday.

            0 Ammonia

              I forgot to add...

the 23" Tancho Kohaku is no longer in the pond...

A total of 6 koi in a 4000 gallon pond. Not perfect, but not crowded either.

Last years Dainichi tosai this year

While she is not of the Hotaru bloodline I thought I would post my one year observation on my Dainichi "Sakura bloodline" Tancho Showa that I got at last years Houston visit.

                She was born Jun 08.
26 April 09 she was 13 inches. (the photo on the far right)
9 May 10 she was 18 inches. (the two photos on the left)

I was a little disappointed in only 5 inches growth in one year in my care, but the over all 18 inches is satisfactory for a 2 year old, at least at my current skill level. She has put on quite a bit of girth, and the sumi is pretty amazing not only for the amount coming up but the depth and quality as well. She is turning out to be quite fun to watch and I expect to be changing for a couple years yet. She and my Showa are teaching me patience.

Now none of this has anything to do with this bloodline, but is just a brief look at a Dainichi tosai to neisi in my pond. I think that the sanke I got this year has better confirmation and even though an inch shorter has more girth so I am excited about the potential.

not a good picture, but one can get an idea of the size difference between this tosai and my nisai. They are all staying low since I caught one earlier.

                      why thank you....

I'm hoping to do as well with this one. She seems to be a good eater and will mix it up with the big girls.

Water temp is consistent at 76 and it's still may.

The girls are now on Saki-Hikari growth in the morning and evening feeding.

Manda Fu in the evening for hand feeding. After the Chagoi has eaten 3 pieces they are all done. If they hesitate they don't get much.

Silkworm pupae at lunch on the weekends. I'll rotate this with Hi-silk 21..

Bentonite clay every monday evening. I have been thinking of putting a large quantity of the rock version of the clay in the bottom level of my bakki shower. If I put a screen on the discharge pipe so the rocks just don't flow out, will the gradual dissolving of the clay eventually clog up the screen? My thought is it will, but has anyone tried this?

Nothing much will change from this schedule so there may not be many more updates until the quarterly report.

She seems to be growing but it is hard to tell. She is so small compared to the others that she always appears small. She just doesn't appear as small as before. She still won't eat out of my hand but she knows when it is dinner time.

The water temp is up to 84 and it's only June.

Have switched to ea one in the morning and then ea one and silkworm pupae in the evening with the occassional manda fu just so I have some fun.

the ph is pretty steady at 7.4 and ammonia and nitrate are undetectable.

I went ahead today and put the hard bentonite clay in the bakki shower. As the water cascades over it, the clay will slowly dissolve into the water. This should give me a constant slow addition to the pond. Or at least I am hoping so.

Well, it may not be such a good idea about the clay.

I put 2 cups in my bakki shower with the water running over thinking it would release a little each day. Now comeon, the rocks are solid and hard. Well, to my shock within 12 hours it had all been released into the water. My water is currently a milky color and I can't see the kids.

While I don't believe this will hurt anything it just makes it hard to see them. Now I understand how this stuff works my idea for a long term automatic release is on hold.

                              July 3 update.

She is looking pretty good. She is measuring in at 15 inches and some pretty impressive growth girth wise. She is bulking up like she is on steroids. Me thinks, she didn't eat as well in Japan.

She has a really nice body shape and just may end up with a Bozo nose.

My koi are being fed EA Show in the morning and evening and in the evening they also get silkworm pupae. The water temp is 84 so the amount they are being fed has been reduced. I am doing 25% water changes weekly.

My thanks again to Bill for showing me where to get my seine net. It took me a total of 15 minutes from getting the net out of the pump house and putting little Hotaru in the bowl.

Hey Lame, getting nervous yet? Sorry I missed you this weekend.
