  • Koi-Bito DVD

I borrowed a copy of this DVD off Mark Gardner at the end of November and have had the pleasure of viewing at my leisure since then. As I am returning it today I gave it one last look yesterday evening.

Only on this second pass did I occasionally reach for the fast forward button, but most of the time I sat there engrossed. Normally with these things I find fault pretty quickly, mostly because they are normally dressed up attempts to get me to part with my money rather than an attempt to teach or entertain, despite what they say on the lid.

This one is different, and it took me a while to figure out why. And then it clicked. With the exception of the family interest at the barbecue, it's an objective peep into the world of Momotaro, almost like eavesdropping. Nobody is trying to tell you what to think. You are left alone to make up your own mind.

Bloody good job as we Brits say.

    Thanks Brian.

I had it playing during our club's Christmas party. It kept many people seriously entertained. My copy is now being passed around between several club members. Hopefully, I'll get it back sometime.

It's going to be hard for Brian to top it next year (but we can hope can't we?)

I have to agree Bern,it is a really great DVD and it was great to be almost like a fly on the wall watching this MASTER doing his daily job! It wasn't hard for me to feel that Mr Maeda isn't in this just to make money, but his love of producing TOP CLASS koi and for the love of the hobby, plus of course to share his excellent work with the rest of the world.... TOP BLOKE!!!

          Col,
Maeda made his money in the catering or restaurant business.
What he has achieved in near ten years as a hobbiest transfering to a breeder is not only miraculous but is basically the fruition of his passion, or one of his passions. For sure some financial security helps you when you set off into pastures new but I'd say he's a very, very serious hobbiest that is breeding koi rather than a straight breeder needing to earn his day to day living from the koi he produces. He may well do, but the motivation or reason, I feel is slightly different.
          Hope that makes sense?

Well I've joined the Momotaro club now.

Mr Gardner got me to part with my dosh. I wish those 50p coins didn't have corners on them. It makes it too easy for koi dealers to get them out of my hands with a spanner (that's a wrench to you Yanks).

I treated myself to a small tosai Kohaku.

Probably one of the most finished fish there was amongst the ones I saw.
I know nothing about Momotaro fish so I bought this one to see how they prosper in my pond.

As Bern is probably still in bed because he is old and retired  here's a pic, 9 months old today and about 30cm.

I have a suspicion that Mark is having a laugh here. But, if he is serious it is understandable as I was giving this fish a lot of attention.

The photo doesn't do the fish justice. THat second hiban has a depth to it and is far from finished. It's a fish with something to do and if I had some experience with this breeder in my pond I might have bought it.

As it was, the fish I 'thought i'd bought' is a much safer bet for my first experiment with Momotaro.

My rationale being that 'if I can't keep a good fish good, what chance have I of developing one with potential'.

PS - the reason for this confusion is that I left the fish with Mark, as the temperatures between our two ponds are too big for a transfer at this time of year.

Bloody Koi dealers, always pulling a scam, knew all along that was the wrong one but gave me chance to post 2 pics instead of one

Good trick and good pick but lousy photo.
You haven't got her best side. The sashi on the other side is her best feature.
