    Hi all,

Just want to ask are these the only common diseases that the koi most likely to suffer from it?

No, that is not even close to all the diseases koi can get. That link is full of mistakes and mis-information. The best thing you can do is delete that link and hang out here for a while. You can learn a lot! Koi can get quite a few different kinds of parasitic diseases, bacterial diseases and several viral diseases.

ROTFLMAO, well Kid I guess you did not come here to learn. So I guess you might as well go back to your friend of a friends expert website...

Will look forward to seeing you in the future, when your expert can not help you solve all your problems... Hopefully it won't be to late for your fish.

I'm guessing this was a not-so-very-well 'disguised' advertisement, Nancy.

            Time will tell.

I thought the idea of jump starting a new koi hobby with a quick course on koi breeding rather unique

They guy who's site you linked to already came here and tried to cram his site down our throats. When you are trying to sell something so you post a link here, it's called free advertising. Your dad's friend is NOT a koi expert. He might think he is, and he might tell everyone he knows that he is, but believe me.....THIS is the place where koi experts hang out. your dad's friend's site is filled up with misinformation. Outright wrong. So best of luck to you and your fish!

Same guy is plastering his "Koi Breeding Tips" over on the Malaysian forum too. Misleading free advertising is not a good way to build trust and confidence, especially among those who already know better.

wondakin, You are on the right track! But you need some detail.

Koi can get many diseases and infestations. Maybe one hundred? But the common problems are the ones you/we really want to know and know how to combat because they are --- well, common!

                      So divide your list/thinking into;

                      1) common parasites

                      a) skin flukes
                      b) gill flukes
                      c) trichodina
                      d) anchor worm
                      e) costia
                      f) Chilodonella
                      g) argulus
                      h) ich

There are many others, such as gill maggots, internal worms, other protozoa etc but the ones above account for 99% of the species most hobbyists will encounter.

                      2) Common Bacteria

                      A) aeromonas
                      b) flexibacter group (3) that cause fin rot/ cloudy eye/ white patches
                      c) pseudomonas

Again several other less common bacterial infections such as streptococcus and chlamydia ( those orange nodules). But the big three above are the 99% common enemy

                      3) fungus & parasitic algae

rarely seen in actual koi ponds but common in some water garden settings. So I would not call them common in a koi pond.

                      4) Virus

the only common one is koi pox ( a herpes virus) considered harmless.
And of course the 'becoming more common' KHV

Others like SVC exist but are rare in koi collections. Sleeping sickness ( a virus ) used to be common in tosia but as it is killed with a simple salt dip we don't see it any more.

Learn to deal with the infestations of the listed parasites, the treatment of aeromonas and the ways to avoid KHV and you will be 99% armed against all koi disease. - JR
