  • How much bio media?

How many cu ft of lava rock are needed to filter a 729 gallon indoor koi pond?
  • #2

How many koi of what size? At less than 1,000 gallons there should only be a very few koi. But more importantly, how much food per day at what percent protein? It is the protein that ultimately becomes the ammonia released by the koi.
Koi keeping is not a belief system; it is applied science with a touch of artistry.

If you don't know the load (amount of food protein and pounds of koi eating it), the the default answer is.....you can't have twoo much filter media. The bacteria colony will expand over the surface as needed to consume the offered food (ammonia and nitrite).

Do a shower and use at least 4 cubic feet. Be sure to clean the rock before putting it into the system. BTW, with 9 koi in 729 gallons, they should be younger/small koi. For Adults you should plan at least 250 gallons per fish.

Here is a presentation I did for our club many years ago. It may help. http://www.atlantakoiclub.org/calend...ilteration.pdf

MCA, from your presentation it states that each pound of koi would need about 15 square feet of surface area in a bio-filter. Was this number generated from the kaldness data?

That was from years ago and I slept since then. As I remember I extrapolated that from a white paper on aquaculture filtration where fish are overfeed for max growth....compared to hobbyists growing out ornamental carp.

Would like to hear any corrections or updates in this area.
